Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Automated External Defibrillators
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the United States, claiming nearly 300,000 lives each year. When someone collapses from SCA, the immediate implementation of CPR and the immediate use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) are essential for any chance of survival. For every minute that SCA is left untreated, the victim's survival rate decreases by 7-10%.1 Therefore the earlier that CPR can be started and an AED used, the better the outcome.
In the State of Montana, where professional medical assistance can often be delayed, it is essential that an AED is readily available and that ordinary people are trained in CPR and the use of AEDs. In order to increase the number of AEDs and the number of people trained to use them, the American Red Cross of Montana has partnered with three AED manufacturers and is able to facilitate the sale of four excellent AED models.
