While it was founded by Congressional Charter, the American Red Cross operates independently of the United States government and it receives no governmental aid. Because of this the Red Cross relies on the generosity of its volunteers and its donors!

The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton and a circle of acquaintances in Washington, D.C. on May 21, 1881. It received Congressional Charters in 1900 and 1905, the second of which remains in effect today.

 

Why was the American Red Cross founded?

The American Red Cross was founded as part of the International Red Cross Movement in order to provide care for the wounded of the battlefield. Under the direction of its early members, the American Red Cross grew to assist victims of peacetime disasters as well. Today the American Red Cross continues to help those in need, whether they are military personnel, persons affected by disaster, or persons in need of First Aid of CPR.
